چکیده

There are two main ways in which the knowledge created in universities has been transferred to firms: licensing agreements and the creation of spin-offs. In this paper, we describe the main steps in the transfer of university innovations, the main incentive issues that appear in this process, and the contractual solutions proposed to address them. † We gratefully acknowledge the financial support from 2009-07616ECON, 2009SGR-169 and ICREA Academia. ‡ Dep. of Economics & CODE, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Generating science-based growth: an econometric analysis of the impact of organizational incentives on university-industry technology

In recent years, there has been a rapid rise in commercial knowledge transfers from universities to practitioners or university/industry technology transfer (UITT), via licensing agreements, research joint ventures, and startups. In a previous study in 1999, the authors outlined a production function model to assess the relative efficiency of UITT and conducted field research to identify severa...

Paying People to Be Healthy

User Financial Incentives (UFIs) have emerged as a powerful tool for health promotion. Strong evidence suggests that large enough incentives paid to individuals, conditional on behaviour they can control, encourages more of the desired behaviour. However, such interventions can have unintended consequences for non-targeted behaviours. Implementation difficulties that result in individuals not u...

Explaining Differences in Sub-National Patterns of Clean Technology Transfer to China and India∗

The Kyoto Protocol’s Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) is capable of incentivizing the international transfer of environmentally sound technologies. Given that both countries are expected to have similar incentives when managing the distribution of technology transfer within the country, why does the sub-national patterns in allocation of projects with technology transfer differ across the two ...

The role of information in repeated games

We show that in repeated interactions the avenues for effective provision of incentives depend crucially on the type of information players observe. We establish this conclusion for general repeated games in which players learn information via a continuous-time stationary process that has a continuous multi-dimensional Brownian component and a Poisson component and in which the players act freq...

The Unilateral Incentives for Technology Transfers: Predation (and Deterrence) by Proxy

Joint production between rival firms often entails knowledge transfers without direct compensation, leaving the question as to why more efficient firms would give their rivals such an advantage. We find that such transfers are credible mechanisms to make the market more competitive so as to deter entry or force exit. We determine that with free entry such transfers are profitable and further it...
